Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (8 March 1714 ? 14 December 1788) was a German musician and composer, the second of five sons of Johann Sebastian Bach and Maria Barbara Bach. He was a crucial composer in the transition between the Baroque and Classical periods, and one of the founders of the Classical style, composing in the Rococo and Classical periods. The music for this concerto is definitely by C.P.E. Bach -- it corresponds to an authenticated harpsichord concerto -- but the flute adaptation may be by someone else. In the opening Allegro, the orchestra lays out the thematic material, including a dramatic minor-key principal theme and a lighter melody more amenable to ornamentation. The solo flute takes up this material, necessarily rendering it more graceful than the driving orchestral introduction initially suggested. Once the flute has played its version of the material, the orchestral exposition is repeated, whereupon the flute begins a highly ornamented development of the themes. This is extremely virtuosic writing, sending the flute across a wide range, not to mention through a rapid and unusual succession of keys: E, F, B flat, D minor, E major again, and A minor.
The second movement, Un poco andante, flows smoothly and elegantly, in strong contrast to some of the strangely agitated slow movements Bach would write in the 1770s and 1780s. Yet even here is a hint of the composer's future audacity. When the flute takes over the lovely, arching galant melodies, it progresses from charming cantabile playing to dramatic recitative-like sections.
Bringing the work to an unexpectedly thrilling conclusion is the Allegro di molto, music of remarkable speed and intensity. The flutist must not only be nimble, but must be able to hurtle down two and a half octaves in a single short passage, dodge exploding motifs in the orchestra, and hurl itself up several long scales. The sheer delirium of this music goes far beyond anything the composer's father ever attempted (although the style does have its roots in the flamboyant style of some Italian Baroque violinists); it looks ahead to the storm and stress of Haydn's middle-period symphonies, and indeed some of the hurricanes unleashed by early Romanticism.
